What to know before your visit

What is Bodywork?

Bodywork is a type of massage therapy that takes into account your posture, joint mobility, daily activities, repetitive movement patterns, & pain points to determine what areas should be treated.  Think of it as a functional massage or muscle therapy.

Muscles that are found to be the true issues are compressed in order to release (or relax) them.

What is visceral manipulation?

Visceral manipulation along with its counterparts really strives to get to the root of tension patterns.  Our organ, including our Brain are so closely related to how we move, how we feel, how we move, and even where we feel pain.  Even our past, present emotions are held in our organs!

Visceral manipulation is a form of manual therapy that lightly brings organs back into their normal rhythms & eases tension around the fascia of the viscera (organs) & their attachments.  Visceral manipulation is for everyone; it works if you have muscular issues, have been undergoing high levels of stress, have trauma, etc.

How is bodywork different from a massage?

Most massage sessions don’t take into account the individual presentations of each person in regards to stress levels, repetitive activities/movements, activity levels, sports, posture, pain referrals, over/underworking muscles & other factors.

Bodywork addresses the origin of your pains.  It is not a full body massage; instead, the muscles that are overworking are relaxed, and the muscles that are weak are strengthened.

What is IASTM (Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization)?

In my practice, I personally use IASTM as an adjunct to soft tissue therapy if a client so agrees to the treatment.  IASTM is based off of the Chinese medicine practice of GuaSha, although records of its use date back to the Paleolithic era.

Its purpose is to cause micro-trauma to tissue in order for the body to send in its repairing units to lay down better muscle & fascia.  Personally, I use it when I feel tissue is not healthy & that compressions alone won’t accomplish much in regards to the healing speed of muscle & fascia.

What should I NOT expect from bodywork?

-Full body relaxation massage

-Swedish or deep tissue (bodywork is very deep but it’s not done on the entire body in 1 session)

-Correction of multiple issues in 1 or 2 sessions; the manual therapy is 1 aspect of the sessions, the other aspect is teaching you what to do at home to prevent these issues from recurring.

-Formal rehab of surgeries such as ACL, Tendon surgeries, etc, etc.  However, I can refer you to a PT that can help you with that.

-Pelvic floor work; but I can also refer you to someone who can help with pelvic floor dysfunction.

What should I wear?

Men: Loose shorts

Women: Sports bra & shorts

How often should I make appointments?

This all depends on your goals and individual physical presentations.  Posture correction can be straightforward or complex.  Every person has a different treatment plan.  After your 1st visit, I will be able to give you an estimate of sessions.  However, no matter the number of sessions, lack of at home practices and long periods between session will stall or regress the work done in sessions.

Can I have this treatment if I am currently undergoing chemo or radiation therapy?

For clients undergoing chemo and radiation therapies – *Please note that I require a doctor’s note that states the doctor is aware of and agrees to the desired treatment.

How soon after any surgery can I come see you?

If you have had abdominal surgery, and would like visceral therapy, please bring in a note from your surgeon saying that it is ok for you to receive therapeutic abdominal massage.  If you have had surgery anywhere else and want treatment in that area, the same rule applies; I need to have a release form from your Doctor saying that it is ok to have work done in that area.
